1999 Annual Report

Employment Practices

The Employment Practices Committee (EPC) met regularly during 1999 and continued to focus on issues which ensure industry good practice in the area of employee relations. Bob Connon and John Monks talk after the Offshore Industry signs a historic Consultation Arrangement with the Trade Unions.

The EPC, in partnership with the Inter-Union Offshore Oil Committee (IUOOC), held a press conference in Aberdeen in June 1999 in order to launch an updated Consultation Arrangement between UKOOA and the recognised Trade Unions. This arrangement will provide an opportunity for good practice guidelines to be developed through joint consultation with UKOOA and the Trade Unions affiliated to the TUC and used across the industry as a standard.

In addition, the Committee has ensured that any proposed UK and European legislation is debated and where appropriate, has lobbied government departments in order to highlight the industry’s position.

The Working Time Directive and how it would be applied to offshore workers has continued to be a major focus of attention for the EPC. During 1999, European Ministers tabled a number of amendments and counter amendments to the application of this Directive and again the EPC, after consultation with member companies, provided the industry’s view.
