UKOOA Sustainability Strategy 2002 - First Report
4. Stewardship - Making Prudent use of Natural Resources
4.3 Reducing Energy Used And Wastes Generated
Commitment No. 55 - Energy Efficiency

All UKOOA member companies recognise that better energy efficiency reduces emissions, reduces depletion of natural resources and makes good business sense.  The challenge we face is to continue to find ways to reduce energy consumption in all our operations.  The options available are significant, and can range from: cogeneration projects (in which steam and electricity are produced simultaneously); flare reduction including gas sales projects, improved reliability and shutdown co-ordination to the use of low energy lighting in offices.  Led by UKOOA's Environment and Energy Policy Group, we are committed to reviewing energy use, and to maintaining efforts to improve energy efficiency.

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

Energy Use is also covered under Commitment No.47  (in connection with GHG reductions).  This also gives some details of the proposed study that has now been designed and scoped, which will help take forward understanding of some of the areas of energy use by the offshore industry.  The study will be looking at the major areas from turbine use on platforms and FPSOs, to reinjection of produced water, to the energy involved in decommissioning.  UKOOA has in the past commissioned work on energy use in the industry.  The Atmospheric Workgroup now plans to review this work potentially leading to new guidance..

The table below shows that most energy use offshore some 70% - is associated with compressing and pumping, with power generation accounting for most of the remainder.

Table: Energy consumed in UKCS offshore operations

Area of consumption / Loss  Value in PJ  %
Compression and pumping   130 70
Power generation used for other facilities 46 25
Process Heating and HVAC  4 2
Other losses    5 3
Total 185 100

Case Study:  Example of a company's energy savings initiative

ExxonMobil's UK upstream operations energy saving and voluntary emission reduction initiatives in place in 2001 include:

  • flare gas recovery compressor and waste gas boiler installed at SAGE onshore gas plant in 2001 to reduce the amount of fuel gas required to generate steam, recovering approximately 4 million scf/d of saleable gas.
  • reduction of stripping gas usage on Beryl A glycol regeneration units 175 thousand scf/d.
  • recovery of de-aerator stripping gas on Beryl A 200 thousand scf/d gas usage reduction.
  • reduction of stripping gas usage on Beryl B glycol regeneration units 153 thousand scf/d.
  • reduction of atmospheric vent header purge rate on Beryl B 135 thousand scf/d gas usage reduction.

Additional energy saving projects are still under study.  The total cost of all these projects is approx. £12 million.
