UKOOA Sustainability Strategy 2002 - First Report
4. Stewardship - Making Prudent use of Natural Resources
4.1 Responsible use of our products, overall impacts
Commitment No. 52 - Whole life cycle impact of upstream operations [2002]

The various initiatives in this section illustrate the steps we are taking towards understanding the full picture of the whole life cycle impact of our operations in terms of resources used (inputs) and product / wastes generated (outputs).  (See relevant initiatives under the separate sections headed Design for Environment, Energy and Wastes, and End of Operations Legacy.)  In 2002, we will review all these elements together to obtain a fuller understanding of the total picture and potential actions that may emerge.

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

This commitment is being pursued in 2002 and beyond.  UKOOA, in partnership with an independent policy institute, has applied for funding for a project to develop a methodology for measuring sectoral sustainable development. The overall aim of this research project, if approved, is to derive a methodology to relate company financial accounting systems to the material flows through the company, to its environmental risks and impacts, and to its stakeholder relationships. The project will not specifically be addressing product impacts, but its holistic methodology should progress understanding of both resources used (inputs), and wastes generated (outputs).
