UKOOA Sustainability Strategy 2002 - First Report
3. Protecting the Environment
3.2 Increasing knowledge and understanding of impacts
Commitment No. 43 - Environmental impact assessments
We intend to set up a system for sharing of information and experience on EIAs across the industry.  We will establish best practice guidelines in consultation with the DTI during 2001 and engage with NGOs throughout this process.
Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

a) Information and experience sharing

A system has been established whereby all operators provide copies of their Environmental Impact Assessments to the Aberdeen office of UKOOA, where they are available to the membership.  In addition, individual company learnings and experience from drawing up specific Environmental Impact Assessments are shared at Environment Committee meetings as well as during informal contacts.

b) Development of best practice guidelines

An external consultancy has developed best practice guidelines, and a draft is now with DTI and environment NGOs for their comment.  It is hoped this process can be finalised by year end.  These guidelines go beyond the basic outline of what the legislation requires in an Environmental Impact Assessment to assist those drawing up an EIA in understanding the detailed requirements and allow them to learn from examples of best practice.
