UKOOA Sustainability Strategy 2002 - First Report
3. Protecting the Environment
3.1 Environmental management
Commitment No. 41 - Workforce environmental awareness and training
We will develop a framework in 2001 to identify and address environmental awareness and training needs, ensuring all employees achieve a basic understanding of environmental issues. We will involve contractors in this process, which will be implemented across the industry between 2001-03.
Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

Progress has been made in relation to this commitment, but the work is not yet complete.

Many operators have already undertaken this type of training - indeed it is a requirement of ISO 14001.  A consultant has been taken on to assist with these efforts and has drafted a syllabus for awareness and training.  We have identified the offshore workforce as the main focal point for environmental training. We have also identified the importance of building on existing company-specific environmental training initiatives. We recognise the need to provide a foundation for operations-specific training programmes (e.g. drilling, seismic, etc).

One potential format is computer based training (CBT), aimed, given that much environmental training is very task specific, at producing something of value to employees with diverse job risks.  We are also looking into the potential for using web-based training.
