During 2001, UKOOA will survey its members on stakeholder dialogue practices, share findings and explore links between external engagement and staff development.

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

A survey was carried out in late 2001. It suggests that a significant majority of members conduct stakeholder dialogue. The breadth and depth of it seems to be directly proportional to the size of the company.
Dialogue is carried out with a full range of stakeholders including: the local community; local government; environmental and other NGOs; local and national politicians; media; fishing representatives.
At one end of the scale the dialogue is formal, structured and ongoing. Smaller companies are more likely to have fewer stakeholders and consult as required, by events or issues. Topics selected for dialogue range from being open to the stakeholders, through company activity, environmental statements and decommissioning, to social and community issues. Feedback can be, in large organisations, through independent reports and, in smaller companies, through two way dialogue or written responses and informal contact.
Staff involved benefit by gaining a better understanding of others with whom the business interacts. Some companies use community programmes or projects as vehicles for staff engagement and development in the wider community of stakeholders.
