UKOOA Sustainability Strategy 2002 - First Report
2. Social Sustainability
2.3 Engagement with society - communities, schools and fishermen
Commitment No. 31 - Relations, local communities: industry contributions

During 2001, we will quantify total industry community activity by extending our survey on financial contributions to include time spent and staff numbers involved in supporting community based initiatives.  We will produce case studies to demonstrate the nature and extent of community involvement.

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

A survey was carried out towards the end of 2001 with a view to quantifying total industry community activity.  Many members had difficulty in quantifying such activity, but results suggest that 2000 was a particularly good year.  Financial contributions would appear to have been in the £10-15 million range.  Data are still being examined and this figure will be refined in the light of that.

Staff involvement is substantial.  It is clear that hundreds of UKOOA members staff are involved, with up to 30% of staff in some companies.  Large projects sometimes have a dedicated staff resource.  Staff time makes up a significant amount of the total resource dedicated to community activity.

Case studies are being prepared to assist in exchanging best practice.
