Commitment No. 20 - Workforce safety: behavioural change, leadership
Personal commitment, leadership and industry-wide behavioural changes are the key drivers to improve safety performance. We re-affirm our determination to achieve the targeted step change in safety.
One means is through developing personal actions to be undertaken by each individual. We are launching Changing Minds a practical guide for behavioural change in the oil and gas industry, which emphasises the importance of changing behaviour of all levels within an organisation and the need for this to start with leadership.

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

To encourage better behaviour, all Council members of UKOOA have committed themselves to signing personal safety contracts and have been encouraged to spread such actions through their own companies. Similarly, the leading contractors have been urged to make such commitments within their own organisations. To help improve safety behaviour, a management self assessment tool (available inter-actively on the Step Change website and a practical guide for behavioural change, Changing Minds (available from the Step Change support team on info@stepchangeinsafety.net or by downloading from the website), have been developed.
Furthermore, PILOT, the joint government-industry body, has adopted Step Change in Safety and its objectives as its first priority in 2002; the leadership team of Step Change is also being revitalised with the intention of obtaining a re-commitment to the aims of the initiative and with higher level focal points in each company, operators and principal contractors, being identified.
