Commitment No. 8 - Support for UK business overseas
|
|
|
"We will work with Trade Partners UK, formerly British Trade International (BTI), to support UK exports. We have launched the Oil and Gas Business to Business Mentoring Initiative, backed by the DTI, to help SMEs develop a strategic view of future industry needs while giving a strategic view of future industry needs while giving ourselves, as operators, a better understanding of the companies providing us with supplies and services. Over the next 18 months, key individuals in ten oil companies will act as personal mentors to 20 SMEs across the country."

This is also one of the principal deliverables of PILOT: a 50% increase in exports between 2000 and 2005. Recent surveys of industry's export performance have established reliable data for the first time: in 2000, there were some £3 billion worth of exports of goods and services (excluding the export of oil and gas themselves or their products), supporting 75,000 jobs in the UK which are in addition to the 270,000 supported by UKCS activity.
Trade Partners has developed a clear export strategy whose main elements are to help:
- prime contractors based in UK win international projects
- UK suppliers bid for overseas projects from oil companies and prime contractors
- UK companies secure overseas partnerships to satisfy local content requirements.
As an example, a recent, five day visit to Aberdeen by the Director of the British Trade Office in Calgary, Alberta and the return trade mission in June to both Calgary and St. Johns, Newfoundland are supported by Trade Partners UK, Aberdeen City Council and the industry, the aim being to introduce UK companies to the Canadian oil and gas sector and the opportunities within it.
An SME mentoring initiative, backed by DTI, has been established by the industry, with support and participation from operators and major contractors advising SMEs how larger companies function here and overseas and how better to work together. This process gives valuable insights for both parties and enhances business opportunities.
