Commitment No. 5 - Decommissioning - operational efficiencies through co-operation
"The whole upstream sector is represented in the North Sea Decommissioning Group (NSDG), which is facilitating communication among all parties with an interest in decommissioning, mapping best practice and addressing identified gaps in knowledge. We are also investigating a co-operative approach to abandoning over 300 suspended wells. Over 100 have recently been abandoned in an industry initiative to reduce numbers.
(See also 1.3 Developing New Technologies and 4.4 End of Operations Legacy for other actions relating to decommissioning)."

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered
Please also refer to Commitment No. 15 and No. 57. New technology and a higher than expected price of oil have enabled some decommissioning decisions to be deferred. However, the NSDG continues to provide a forum for the exchange of information, with representatives of operators in Norway and UK, contractors and regulators.
Work continues on abandoned wellheads, with the number now being below 300 and a new target being set to reduce this to 100 by the end of 2006.
