Workforce Capacity and Capability – Supplementary Statistics and Commentary

The research also revealed that significant numbers of women are now entering technical roles within the industry, with over 1,800 females travelling offshore in 2006. The average age for female workers was, at just 34.1 years, much lower than the total workforce and indicated that recruitment drives targeting female graduates and other young professionals into the industry are having positive results.

A total of 117 nationalities were represented on the offshore workforce, with UK workers accounting for 85.1% of all offshore personnel in 2006. Norway (2.4%), the Netherlands (2%) and the U.S. (0.6%) were the next highest contributors to the UKCS workforce.

Oil & Gas UK will continue to review the Vantage POB data on a regular basis to allow the monitoring of the workforce demographics and permit the continued identification of potential areas of concern. The findings of the report emphasise the continued need to focus recruitment efforts to avoid potential skills shortages in the future, an issue which Oil & Gas UK, alongside OPITO(Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation) and Cogent, is working to address.
