UKOOA is the representative organisation for the leading companies in the UK offshore oil and gas industry. Our members are licensed by the UK government to explore for and produce oil and gas in UK waters.
The role of oil and gas in sustaining our society is pivotal. The benefits that they bring to the UK are legion and, whilst no extractive industry can be ultimately sustainable in itself, it can help to sustain our economy and lifestyles which, ultimately, can allow a move to alternative energy forms which future generations will need.
The importance of the UK’s oil & gas within the country’s energy policy is outlined in UKOOA’s submission to the UK Energy Review 2006 “Our Energy Challenge” – which can be found at www.oilandgas.org.uk, the summary of which is appended to this report.
The 2006 Sustainable Development Report is an update on the measures identified by the full strategic review of 2005. This has built on the initial strategy of 2001, encompassing the new challenges of maturity; sustaining the industry’s economic contribution to the UK and setting its potential legacy:
- Sustaining the economic contribution to the UK: for primary energy supply by extending recovery from existing fields and finding and developing new fields; as a major source of industrial investment and employment
- Managing the sector’s legacy: concerning the skills and technology developed here but applicable elsewhere e.g. in renewables; the use of infrastructure for further developments and possibly carbon sequestration and the decommissioning footprint
The industry challenges, goals and reporting measures against each of the three SD segments of environment, social and economics are outlined in the table below. The rest of the report then provides the last 5 years of data against each of these performance measures.
