4.2 Design for Environment

Progress to date: achievements and difficulties encountered

VOC recovery
VOC emissions in the upstream oil and gas industry come primarily from tanker loading crude oil, either offshore or at onshore terminals. Mitigation measures have been used to reduce emissions and recovery facilities have been installed at some loading points. UKOOA is examining ways in which remaining VOC emissions from tanker loading might be further reduced. A number of possible technologies have been identified, although there are pros and cons in each case. UKOOA is also investigating emissions figures to verify current estimating techniques and is working to provide a guidance document to identify VOC reduction technology.

Sustainable Development Action Plan

Infrastructure and equipment design

The wider upstream industry has already done much to improve cost effectiveness through new technology. In partnership with our contractors and suppliers, we will examine the potential for improving the environmental design of future installations and equipment and review the progress that has already been made.
