Meeting the Challenge

Maturity

Much has been made of the maturity of the UKCS and the unique challenges and opportunities this creates. Figure 22 gives quantitative verification to the assertion. The UKCS has a much larger proportion of its remaining reserve potential in mature fields than many other provinces. Also of significance is the large volume of discovered reserves in the "technical" category.

Commercialisation of this volume represents a considerable prize for the UKCS upstream industry and has led to specific actions within PILOT to accelerate the pace of development. Successful extraction of these reserves provides the opportunity for the UK supply chain to sell its expertise in exploiting the potential of a maturing basin to other provinces as they begin to face similar challenges.
