Managing Impacts in the Marine Environment Managing Impacts in the Marine Environment (MIME) is a two-year research programme that started in 1997 and is jointly funded by Government and UKOOA members. This multi-disciplinary research initiative comprises of a range of projects some of which are listed below and the results of which we hope to describe in our next report. Seabed Processes And Appraisal Of Impacts: A chemical appraisal of offshore drill cuttings, which will help predict possible environmental impacts after decommissioning. It is examining: the sensitivities of cold water corals and sponges in relation to oil and gas activity West of the Shetlands; the seabed boundary layer of the continental slope West of the Shetlands; suspended sediment transport on the continental slope West of the Shetlands; Measurement And Management Of Chemical Discharges: This section of the programme is looking into: developing methods for detecting and quantifying production chemicals (corrosion inhibitors, emulsifiers etc) in the marine environment; managing the impact of discharges of industrial chemicals into the marine environment.
